Hanging Around: Popular Plants for Hangers

Hanging plants are all the rage right now and it’s a trend I’m really glad to see make a comeback!

From gorgeous vines that flow out over the sides of pots to hardy succulents and colourful flowering plants, the choice of hanging plants is endless. I’ve picked out a few plants below that people love to grow from hanging pots, to help you get started on your hanging plant journey!

Boston Fern

Ferns are a popular choice for hangers due to their hardy nature, and the boston fern is no exception to this. These plants love humidity, making them well-suited to the Aussie climate. Due to their love of humidity, the boston fern also makes a great plant for hanging in the bathroom. Like many tropical plants, these ferns like to have damp (not wet) soil, so make sure to check the soil regularly, and water it as soon as it starts feeling dry. The boston fern isn’t poisonous, making it a great choice for homes with pets and children!

Arrowhead

Also known as nepthytis, the arrowhead is a great plant for beginners thanks to its hardiness. These plants like indirect sunlight, making them great for areas of the home that don’t get a lot of direct light. It’s best to let arrowhead plants dry out between watering sessions, as too much moisture can cause root rot. It’s also important to pick a pot with proper drainage to ensure the optimal health of
your plant. While gorgeous, arrowheads are poisonous, so be sure to always wear gloves when handling them! Due to their toxic nature, they’re best-suited to a home without pets or young children.

Donkey’s Tail

This succulent is a great choice for those of us who forget to water our plants from time to time! Donkey’s Tail are beautiful plants from the Sedum family, with fleshy, pastel green foliage that can grow up to 60cm long! Being succulents, these plants love full-sun, so are best grown on a sunny patio or next to a window that gets a lot of sun each day. They require minimal watering, needing a drink about once a week in spring and summer, and as little as once a month during the colder months. Donkey’s tail is also non-toxic, which means it’s a great choice for homes with curious explorers.

String of Nickels

The string of nickels is another succulent that makes for a great hanging plant. Getting its name from its leaves which grow in strings of green coin-like shapes, the string of nickels loves humidity, making it highly-suited to a bathroom or tropical Australian environment. These plants look super cute hanging from a pot, as their leaves cascade over the edges. String of nickels prefer filtered light, and
like to be watered once the soil has had a chance to dry out. Similar to million bells, I couldn’t find any information saying whether these plants were or weren’t toxic, so it would be best to speak with a nursery or plant care expert to find out before purchasing.
