How to Choose the Colour of Your Plant Pot

How to Choose the Colour of Your Plant Pot

We love injecting a little colour into our interior design and there’s no better way to do that than with an expertly chosen planter.

While you can never go wrong with your standard white or black planters, we’re here to show you how to mix things up a little bit in the best way possible.

When we first started producing our planters we were simply looking for a way to capture the essence of our own unique taste in our interior decor plans. Still to this day we are guided by personal taste and intuition to bring our designs to fruition.

We have never been one to shy away from colour: be that the ideal blend of shades for our terrazzo planters, crafting a distinct palette for an eagerly-awaited fresh collection, or even finding the perfect balance of extravagance and individuality when it comes to our eclectic home decor.

We at Capra designs put the fun and enjoyment back into selecting that perfect planter you have been searching for. That one finishing touch to bring your home decor to life and realise that vision you originally had. To help you find the ideal planter, here are a few handy tips to consider when selecting your desired colour:

1. Decide where you would like your plant pot to live before selecting the plant.

Choosing your plant first is only going to limit where in your home you can position it and hence the type of planter you require.

The first thing you want to consider is the amount of sun that part of your home receives throughout the day, this will impact both your choice of planter and plant. Next, decide whether you a looking to brighten up the room with a bold golden or terracotta focal point or if you are in the market for a more muted salt or fossil colour, one that’s not going to detract from your plant's eye-catching beauty.

Finally, consider the colour of the wall your plant will sit in front of. Is it muted or vibrant? With that in mind, are you looking to contrast or match the current color of your room?

 2. It can be a good idea to use complementary colors.

Understanding the foundations of complementary color combinations can really help bring your decor to the next level. While pretty much anyone could likely pair a black or white planter with their current style, things get a little trickier as you get more colorful.

Fortunately, there is a really simple way to check whether colours will work together or not. The below colour wheel shows you exactly what works best, simply find the colour of your room/wall and the colour directly opposite is the one you want.

As you can see in the example, if you have a blue colour wall, then an orange plant pot is your best bet.

Now, if you want to take this concept even further you can start to look at the tertiary colors, which are the secondary colors on either side. See here that purple and pink both complement yellow.

Combining complementary colours into a single space helps bring them out even more and really makes your design pop! The next concept you can play around with is adding gradients of the same color for a sophisticated, coordinated look. For example, the image here shows how shades of grey and green can be combined to striking effect:

3. Take advantage of different textures such as terrazzo planters to create distinct visual layers.

Combining block color elements with objects of varying textures is a great way to make your interior design feel unique and personalized.

We recommend using a terrazzo planter or two in addition to a single-colour plant pot in order to achieve the desired effect of sophisticated texture variation.

To sum up, before you choose your perfect planter we recommend first considering the space it will occupy before settling on either a plant or a plant pot. This includes considering how the light will hit that space throughout the day, as well as your intended impact - be that a bold statement piece, or subtle nuance. Next, use the wheel to combine complementary primary and tertiary colours, as well as build in some subtle tones and gradients. Finally, consider using a mix of terrazzo planters and single-colour pots to add that textured subtlety and create a style that is distinctly you.

We look forward to seeing how you incorporate these tips when purchasing your next planter!
