Palm Springs, a Desert Modernism Mecca
Capra Designs have always been influenced by the lines, shapes and simplicity of Mid-Century Modern design. This is however the first time we've found ourselves concentrating on this era of design in the harsh desert climate of Palm Springs. It has created inspiration for our Back to Nature Collection.
Palm Springs has a large concentration of Mid-Century Modern Architecture. These sleek homes have been created to embrace the dessert environment and collectively have been labeled Desert Modernism. Many of these buildings share attributes designed in response to the bright and arid climate – including overhanging roof planes and shaded verandahs.
Through residential design, architects such as John Lautner, Richard Neutra and Albert Frey shaped the Californian lifestyle in the 1950's and 1960's.
Albert Frey House II. The Swiss architect Albert Frey, who studied under Le Corbusier in Paris, came to Palm Springs in 1934. This was the second home he built for himself, in 1964.
