The Top Interior Design Trends we Took Away From Maison & Objet

For those unfamiliar, Maison & Objet is a prestigious tradeshow that takes place in Paris on a bi-annual basis. It has been described as "among the 3 most important European events for interior design” and is one of the best places to go to draw inspiration and see the latest home decor trends showcased.

Here are some of the most popular themes we discovered during the latest Maison & Objet event.

1. Comfort equals luxury.

There was no way you could miss the popularity of deep, inviting sofas and chairs. The kind that you just want to curl up in and fall asleep. Honestly, they were everywhere you looked. It seems the latest trend is to design your home as though it were an upscale hotel suite - and a welcome trend it certainly is. It is no surprise considering the amount of time we’ve spent in the comfort of our own homes over the past few years.

It’s time to turn our homes into sanctuaries we cannot wait to spend time in. Think handcrafted designer trays, planters, and other feature items full of personality, carefully selected works of art, and crafted lighting features. Then add some luxuriously thick curtains and thick-pile rugs to capture an inviting atmosphere of warmth and style.

2. Have fun with light and creative interior designs by incorporating bold floral shapes and vivid colors.

It’s a refreshing change of pace to see the seriousness being taken out of our interior design and being replaced with an 80s-era approach of fearless creativity. To capture the essence of this trend, picture deep purples and bright oranges, neon pinks, and stark yellows. With that color palette in mind, add in some eccentric furniture pieces full of curves and contours, then embrace the floral aesthetic with an abundance of plants and evocative shapes.

Such childlike abandon feels like a breath of fresh air doesn’t it? Capture a living snapshot of the past - full of play and contemporary nods - by inviting vibrant glassware into the home (such as the test-tube style single stem vase and small colored vase/glass featured below), playfully shaped candles, and floral embroidery.

3. Tactile Textures are the New Interior Design Standard

In addition to bold and vibrant colors, incorporating natural textures into your home decor appears to be a trend with real staying power. Blending rough stone textures with smooth marble adds an enticing level of depth and intrigue to any interior space and helps blur the lines between the inside and the outside. Ribbed furniture pieces can combine with smaller textured objects such as our range of Terrazzo trays and planters to add an all-new level of dimensionality to your overall aesthetic. See below for how different textures, shapes, and colors can be seamlessly integrated to create a warm yet striking aesthetic.

With so much on offer we certainly left with a feeling of sensory overload but also an invigorated creative outlook! It was an amazing experience to see such beautiful objects incorporated into cutting-edge fashion and we left with considerable optimism for the future of interior design. We cannot wait to see how you incorporate these trends into your own home decor journey and what part our designer vases, trays, and planters will play in that process.

Just remember, whatever approach you take the most important thing is to make the design process your own. Have fun, don’t take yourself too seriously, and get creative! Your home is a sanctuary. Make it warm, inviting, and comfortable, and keep us updated on your progress.
